10 Things To Know Before Getting Liposuction

Weight Loss

Liposuction is the mechanical removal of unwanted fat from the body.

Considerations:

1. Smokers run increased risk of developing chest infections after liposuction. Birth control pill users will have increased chances for blood clotting. In both cases you will be required to stop several weeks before the operation.

2. Aspirin and other anti-inflammatory drugs should be stopped before the surgery as they may lead to excessive bleeding due to their blood thinning properties.

3. A considerable amount of bruising which heals in a few weeks. Be aware also that you may experience some swelling and lumpy skin for some time.

4. People with poor health, diabetes, poor blood circulation heart disease are not good candidates for liposuction.

5. If your skin is predisposed to forming keloid (red raised scars) scars on healing then your scars from the cuts the surgeon will have to make, may heal into keloid scars. They may be corrected but will require another surgery.

6. Numbness may result in the area being treated and may take as long as six months to disappear.

7. Damage to internal organs could occur which would result in another surgery to correct, but only in rare cases.

8. Sometimes fluids forms under the skin and have to be drained out.

9. Like any other operation you may be allergic to the anesthetic, suffer an infection or too much bleeding.

10. The imbalance that may be created by fluid lose during the operation may cause problems and even be fatal. And some people may be allergic to the fluids used during the operation.

There 3 types of liposuction

1. Wet liposuction
A salt based fluid will be injected into the area to be treated after the anaesthetic has taken effect. Then the surgeon will vacuum out the fat using a cannula connected to a vacuum by moving it back and forth.
2. Dry liposuction
Same as wet liposuction above except no fluid is injected into the area. It has the disadvantage of likely causing more bleeding and bruising than wet liposuction.
3. Ultrasound liposuction
Ultrasound is used to break up the fat in areas with hard fat like the back. Ultrasound sound waves emitted from a scope rather than the cannula, will liquefy the fat and suck it out. The waves break up the fat cells and turn it to liquid ready for suction. There is less bruising as it is less mechanical. However, deeper cuts are necessary to protect the skin from burns and there is the risk of nerve damage.

To note:
Your new body needs to be maintained with a good diet and regular exercise. Otherwise there is the risk of gaining it all back.

After liposuction:

1. Expect inflammation, swelling and bruising
2. Nausea from the drugs and anesthesia
3. Itching days after. It is a normal occurrence of the healing process
4. A disrupted menstrual cycle
5. Leakage from the cuts that have to be made during the process of liposuction. It may cause staining of furniture and beddings
6. Dizziness and fainting. Avoid strenuous activity and drink lots of fluids
